LIGHT ART EVENT
RAUMA 14.–17.1.2026
1. Light Workshop: Photosynthesis
/ Rauma art museum's backyard
Photosynthesis, a collaborative creation, turns the art museum's backyard into a radiant garden pulsing with energy. The installation features vibrant pieces crafted during art workshops led by the Light Workshop Collective, where Rauma residents of all ages gathered on January 11 and 12 to bring their visions to life.
This galaxy-like ensemble has a dense, energetic center. The energy thins toward the edges. The work brilliantly and captivatingly visualizes a law of the universe related to energy.
Light Workshop is a Helsinki-based light art collective founded in 2008 by Hannu Huhtamo, Jukka Laine, and Janne Parviainen. Alongside their own artistic projects, the collective organizes light art workshops for children and special groups. The works of the collective's members have been exhibited at numerous light art festivals and published in outlets such as National Geographic.
2. George Berlin: Breathe Wild / Raatihuone
This colorful, splashing, and energetic work takes over the wall of the council chamber. The site-specific video mapping was designed specifically for the facade of the Rauma Council Chamber. The work connects our wild side with the digital world in a flowing electric fairy tale of energy. Spiced with the artist's unique humor, the work is an exceptional, visual fireworks display.
George Berlin is an American media artist and sculptor known for his large-scale visual spectacles. His works have been exhibited around the world, including at the world's largest video mapping festivals, iMapp in Bucharest and Art on the Mart in Chicago.

3. Flowers of Life: Electrum
/ Amarillo, Savilankatu 1
A burst of radiant energy lights up the night! Electrum, a UV light installation, transforms a space into a mesmerizing dance of light and color. Vivid hues ignite the night with a sense of enchantment, inviting viewers to lose themselves in a dreamscape of luminous wonder. The artist group is inspired by sacred geometry, an ancient science that explains the energy patterns that create and unify everything that exists.
Flowers of Life is a Finnish art group specializing in UV light art, which has been touring internationally since 2005. The geometry underlying most of their works is inspired by the “Flower of Life,” a foundational motif in sacred geometry.

4. Niko Tiainen: Translucens
/ Kanaali, Kaija
Translucens begins as an apparition emerging out of thin air. The hologram-like projection cast onto a veil of sprinkling water opens a new dimension before our eyes.
The geometric forms in the projection evoke a tesseract, a four-dimensional cube, linking the viewer to the abstract realm of mathematics. Rather than appearing as a static pattern, the multidimensional structure unfolds as a continuously shifting form of energy: a cycle of light, water, and movement.
Although the work may seem like a supernatural phenomenon, it is grounded in carefully crafted technology and geometry derived from strict principles. Both magical and mathematical, the piece highlights the possibilities that arise when the forces of nature and human ingenuity converge.
Niko Tiainen is a media artist specializing in video mapping and interactive video and sound installations. He holds degrees in classical piano performance and composition, graphic design, and a Master’s Degree in New Media Design and Production from Aalto University. His works have been featured in art exhibitions and festivals in over thirty countries.

6. Antti Kulmala: Love me too!
/ Kaija, Alfredinkatu 2
Antti Kulmala’s Love me too will set your heart racing! Bursting with emotion and vibrant energy, this heart-shaped artwork invites you to pause and think about who – and what – you love most. Snap a photo and share it with friends or on social media to spread the love. Take a moment to break free from the daily grind by celebrating joy and connection.
Antti Kulmala, an artist from Pöytyä, works across disciplines with light as his primary medium. His practice is defined by simplicity, sensitivity, and the act of connecting with others through art. Through his installations and community-based projects, he explores how light can bring people together across cultural and generational boundaries.
7. Mixa Visual: Häive
/ Kanaali, Laivurinpolku
The word faint refers to something fleeting, an almost imperceptible sight or impression. The light bridge stretching across the canal casts a faint thought that has a beginning but no clear end. It forms an energy field that leads nowhere. This elusive energy dissipates gradually, briefly flickering from place to place before it finally scatters into the unknown. The work invites us to reflect on fundamental questions of life: where are we going and where will we end up?
Just as the light bridge crosses the canal, our thoughts can move past both seen and unseen barriers, leading us to new ideas and experiences. The work reminds us that a shared journey can be more meaningful than reaching the destination.
Mixa Visuals is a local group whose works combine expertise in lighting and sound technology with artistic creativity. Häive is an unprecedented work commissioned by Lumen Rauma.
8. Mixa Visual: lightning
/ Vanha kaupungintalo, Kanalinranta 3
9. Merja Ala-Olla: Make a wish
/ kaupungintalon sisäpiha, Kanalinranta 3
The flow of water, the gush of wind, and the beating of the human heart merge into a single, hopeful current of vitality in Merja Ala-Olla’s work. In recent years, she has explored the form of the dandelion seed head in her woodcuts, and this same delicate yet powerful motif now carries into her light installation. The seed head becomes a symbol of energy and hope – a fleeting moment when strength transforms into thought. The light forms evoke shimmering water, seeds swept up by the wind, the form of a seed head, or even the mitochondria of cells – layers in which the forces of life converge. The work breathes softly, like hope released into the world as a form of energy.
The works of visual artist and art teacher Merja Ala-Olla appear as dreamlike visions. In her mystical landscapes of space, multiple moons and suns rise while humans search for their place in relation to nature, themselves, and one another. With the patience of a printmaker, Ala-Olla explores the same theme over long periods, changing techniques and colors until the theme feels complete – often only to draw her back to it again later.
10. Reflections / Keskustelupuisto, Kalliokatu 28–30
Reflections is a light installation created for the Central Park’s pavilion by art students from Rauma Lyceum. The work examines energy, reflection, and movement on a micro level, how they flow through us and shape our daily lives. Energy transfers through photosynthesis in the green plants we care for, and kinetic energy propels us forward on our bike ride to school. It constantly shifts form, circulating through living systems as part of the cycle of life.
In this installation, the Central Park’s pavilion is transformed into an atmospheric light source in which colored reflections play across its surfaces. The work is realized in collaboration between the Rauma Lyceum and the Lönnström Art Museum.
Reflections is located within the communal artwork Conversation Park – A Public Space Game by Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen. In the work, a public park was made by 21 Rauma citizens of different ages. The charming park, implemented as a Lönnström project, is located at Kalliokatu 28–30.
11. Tuomo Kangasmaa: Wind Power / Rauman Energia, Kairakatu 4
Wind Power visualizes the transformation of a natural force into an everyday resource. In the work, the windmill renders the wind visible, while the blue curve running beside it – like a pulse – depicts the electrical current captured by a measuring device. Together, they create a simple yet evocative model of how the wind blowing in from the sea is converted into usable energy.
Tuomo Kangasmaa, a visual and media artist, lives and works in Oulu. In recent years, he has created video works that draw on the language of traditional cinema, as well as installations that weave together performance and documentary material. His works have been widely presented in exhibitions and festivals both in Finland and internationally.
